Storytelling through animation

Let's Talk

Summary

Braw Talent worked with Staf, One Community Scotland and the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit to create an animation about stop and search and its impact on young people with experience of care and/or from a minority background.

Our Approach

Story Development & Scriptwriting – We worked with 13 young adults to create characters and scenarios that felt real, and created two scripts: one from a young person's point of view, the other from the police officers.

Visual Design & Stop-Motion Animation – Exploring character design, set building, and animation techniques to bring original stories to life through hands-on creative workshops.

Voiceover & Production – Recording participant voiceovers and editing footage to produce two animated films which show the process of a stop and search from two different perspectives.

Watch the Films

Let's Talk: Part 1

Part 1 looks at the theme of  Stop and Search through the perspective of JJ and his friends. Co-produced by young people, these animations shine a light on what to expect and encourage viewers to consider the perspectives and impacts these interactions have on young people.

Let's Talk: Part 2

Part 2 looks at the scenario from PC Andy's point of view - what might be going through his head when he conducts a stop and search. Both animations showcase good practise and highlight young people's rights within them.

Behind the Scenes

The young adults were part of every part of the creative process - from character design (and what trainers they should wear) to animating the final films.

Impact

The impact of this project extends beyond the workshops themselves. The two co-produced animations form part of a national learning resource developed by the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, helping to spark informed conversations about stop and search between young people, professionals and police officers across Scotland. Alongside the accompanying learning guide, the animations are being used within police training and by organisations supporting young people, ensuring the participants' experiences continue to influence practice, challenge perceptions and strengthen relationships within communities.

Braw Talent have a unique and powerful way of working
alongside young people to create powerful animations which are emotive and fun.

The process and finished article put young people at the centre, it's authentic. They can see themselves in the animation whether it's a phrase they use, the trainers they wear or a facial expression.
